The multimedia stuff is a cheap add-in, and ultimately reduces the cost
of the machine by increasing its popularity.  The stripped-down machine
you've described would have about $35 fewer parts in it than its
multimedia sibling.

While I don't run TeX in Linux, I do in Windows, and I miss the high
color I had on my TP701.  Reason?  Font smoothing.

TeX is the one app for which I've been tempted to buy a CDROM for my
TP560; I would love to have a full complement of all the packages
available in a hurry, but *not* permanently on my HD.

Sound card: I use this to remind me of appointments.  This *is* work!
Video out: I have this on my Micron, and have used it when discussing
data analysis with my colleagues.  I *wish* I had it on my 560, and
would rather have spent the extra $20-$30 for putting the chips on-board
than the $150 or more for buying an external unit.
