That's only required for the information you wish to keep, but I saw in some magazine of a HD upgrade where 
you plug in the new HD to a PCMCIA adapter (they showed this with a 360/755-type ThinkPad), transfer data, 
and then plug the new drive in.  If I find the company, I post it on the list, but it might be PCs Compleat.

Compression also slows down the system.  This may or may not be important to you, depending on your 
applications.
