Just a note to the list:
I recently upgraded the 810 MB HD in my TP 560 to a 2.1 GB HD by Toshiba.
All seems to work quite well. I highly recommend the "Drive Copy" program
by PowerQuest, and as always, their "Partition Magic" software too.
It took about 10 minutes to take apart my 560 (being careful, since it
*doesn't* have a removable drive like so many other ThinkPads have),
another 10 or 15 to put the old & new drives into my desktop computer,
about 10 minutes to run "Drive Copy", then 5 or 10 to run Partition Magic
to set up the partitions they way I wanted (since its a larger drive), and
10 to put it all back together in my ThinkPad.
Everything WOULD have run smoothly in my 560 at that point, but since I had
an extra partition on the new drive and compressed volume in the wrong
place, I had some software configuration to fool around with. If not for
that, the whole process would have been completed--womb to tomb--in about
an hour. All made possible by PowerQuest software. So okay, you can
choose *not* to spend $25 to $70-ish, but in so doing you're spending a
*lot* more time and giving yourself a lot more headaches. I can't
recommend this stuff enough!
And for what its worth, Bill Morrow in Florida, who runs a web page at:
http://thinkpads.com sold me my hard drive at a favorable price and was
very agreeable in negotiating and delivering the goods. If you're looking
to upgrade/purchase a new drive, keep him in mind.
