701CS floppy nowork

I faintly remember an authoritative source which said the answer to my
problem is, "Off to EasyServe" but I wanted to check first with the
knowledge base on this list:

The floppy does not respond. Or rather, it responds with lights and
whirrs, but then delivers a message: "The disk cannot be accessed."

I have worked with combinations of port addresses and such on the bios
and diags pages with no success. Upon receipt of my machine the floppy
worked correctly, and did so for many months after after the Bios flash
update I got from IBM.

I believe I remember the incident when this trouble began: an
unthinking hot-plug of the floppy after a late night.

Can someone confirm hot-plugging is a no-no and EasyServe is the
answer?

Many thanks in advance.
