RE: 701 Win95 video drivers
Sure, you can use hi-colour, 16-bit, 64K colours. Right click on the
screen, choose Properties, then Settings. Choose High Color(16-bit). You
then have to reboot unless you have QuickRes installed (available from
Microsoft ftp site in Powertoys suite).
If w95 won't let you select High Color, then check that you are using the
Chips & Technology adapter driver by clicking on the "Change Display Type"
button. The monitor driver should be the generic "laptop display
(640x480)".
If you go to the Chips & Technology website, you can pick up an updated
driver for the 65545 chip that supports MS's Direct X 3.0 3D display API.
Oh yeah. The 701 sometimes doesn't like hi-colour when a DOS window is
displayed. To get it back to normal, switch to the 701 setup screen
(Fn-F1), then ESCape key to exit. It will unfuzz.
So how does Mars look?

Subject: 701 Win95 video drivers
I finally got around to loading Windows95 on my 701C -- and thanks to all
who sent me kinds words of advice on how to proceed (HINT: download the
Win95Setup and FlashBIOS upgrade files from IBM and install....) I used
a
Mountain Backpack external (parallel port) cd drive and it worked (and
works
generally) like a charm.
My only regret is that I didn't do this months ago....
IBM has Win95 upgrade files for sound, video, & the inra-red mousegizmo,
none of which I have used. Instead, I've let the machine make use of the
Win95-supplied drivers.
And I have a question relating to this use of the Win95 defaults. The
clarity (resolution???) for .jpg graphics sucks, both on the 701 screen
and on external monitors (OK: I'm looking at Martian pictures.....) I
have the video set to 640x480 & 256 colors, and it's my understanding that
this is as high as this system can go. So I'm wondering whether or not
loading the IBM-supplied Win95 upgrade driver would improve resolution
any?
Anybody have any ideas?
Thanks in advance.
