Well, per the signup letter, here's my info:
I own a Thinkpad 701cs (superfly...errr...butterfly). I bought it in March
of 96. It was a display model from the store I was working at, Computer
City. I paid $200 for it, as-is, but with warranty (???). Basically, they
didn't have a power supply, port replicator, battey, or any of the extra's;
but it DID have full warranty from IBM. The store manager didn't even
think it worked anymore. So I bought it, and have somewhat sat on it for
over a year. I just never got around to buying a battery, or any of the
other stuff it needed. Finally, a few weeks ago, I have a few hundred
bucks to spend after paying of the bills and such, so I decided to
re-commision this thing. I bought a battery and power supply for it. So I
startred it up for the first time, and lo and behold, it worked! Well,
sort of. It would run off of the power supply, or it would run off of a
battery, but would not see the ps if the battery was present. Hmm.. that
means no charge. Hmm.. So I shipped it back to IBM via Easy-Serv (what an
incredible painless process!), they replaced the MB and Keyboard (I guess
it needed it), and had it back to me in 4 days as promised. I got it back,
and now it charged batteries! However, the PC Card slots had ceased to
function. Back to Memphis. I sent it back, they replace the MB again, and
had it back to me in 3 days (weekends not included). Impressive. I think
the longest part of the entire process was Fedex getting the package from
their hub here in vegas, to myy office a whole 1.5 miles away. They can
get a box from Memphis to Vegas in 5 hours, and then 8 hours to get it to
my office from there.. heh. Anyway, SO I have my Thinkpad back, It works,
I flashed the Bios, and put 95 on it last night. Almost there! Plugged in
my recently acquired ethernet card, and bam, I was networked! Only thing
left is to get a 16mb chip, and a port replicator. So I sent off the money
for the Port Replicator today. Some guy in Wisconsin had one. $100.
That's reasonable. All that's left is the Ram, which I had seen at the
Chip Merchant (www.chipmerchant.com) for $93 last friday. Unfortunately,
today they disavow any knowledge of such pricing.. Back to the drawing
board. So, to sum up, todays quest? 1 16mb chip for a thinkpad 701.
Anyone have any recomendations?
