Problem with ThinkPad 760 ED and external floppy drive

Hello,

this is my first posting to the list, since it is only ten days that I
bought a (9 month used) ThinkPad 760 ED with 48 MB RAM. My name is Andreas
Busch, I work at the University of Heidelberg, Political Science
department. The ThinkPad I bought because from September onwards, I will
spend a year in the States (in Cambridge, MA).
So much for my introduction, now to my problem: I want to install OS/2 on
it (it has Win 95 installed at the moment). For this I need both a disk
drive and a CD-ROM drive.
So I borrowed an external drive (FDD) from a friend who owns a somewhat
older
ThinkPad model (I donīt recall the precise model at the moment), hoping
that
I could use that (since the kit to turn the internal FDD into an external
one
is not available at the moment, as my IBM dealer tells me).
Now, I can connect the external FDD to the machine. And when I boot the
ThinkPad, it apparently recognizes the FDD (when I have a floppy in the
drive
on boot-up, it complains about this not being a system disk).
However, when the system is booted and I try to access drive A:, it gives
me
a "not accessible" error. I have tried to give the "PS2 FDD E" command,
which
as far as I know is supposed to tell the machine that it should look for
an
external floppy drive, but that doesnīt change a thing.
Now for the REALLY strange part: when I exchange the CD-ROM drive for the
internal floppy drive and do the same as above, the system recognizes the
external drive and I have both a drive A: and a drive B: and can access
both!
That of course is of little use to me, since I need a floppy AND a CD-ROM
drive to install OS/2... But it shows that IN PRINCIPLE the ThinkPad can
access the FDD.

Is there somebody on this list that has solved that problem? If so, or
anybody
else has an idea what I am doing wrong, please tell me!

Thanks in advance

Andreas
