Re[2]: Sources for 2.1 gig HDs for ThinkPad 701CS
well, if no one else is going to chime up...
It's NOT Saran wrap. The jacket is made of the same stuff
as the standard bag that most electronic components are shipped
in. The purpose of the jacket is to protect the exposed components
from contact from static electricity.
Remember, that in most hard drives, some, if not all of the components
are exposed. Normally, that's no big deal since hard drives
aren't usually being handled by people once the drive is installed.
But, removable drives, such as the 701, 360, 760, etc. can potentially
be handled. Thus, the inner jacket.
Bottom line: if you intend to actually remove your hard drive
from your laptop, take anti-static precautions which include wearing
a grounding leash on the wrist that is handling the component(s). If
your hard drive case doesn't fully protect the drive, I'd make
a jacket by cutting an anti-static bag to size.

I am thinking of upgrading too.. some questions:
1. Does the plastic wrap resemble Saran wrap? Would several layers of Saran
wrap work as well?
2. Would the plastic wrap cause any overheating or reduced component life?
TIA, Tom
