On comp.sys.laptops, several people have tried NT on various
models. Right off the bat, I've read that NT shouldn't be attempted
with less than 32MB of RAM, and performance is much improved with
64MB. This is more than a 701 can be upgraded to, but maybe with 40MB
it's not so bad.
Second, MS isn't really fond of portable users running NT, and
haven't designed it for portable use. It's got no APM support, and
doesn't support hot- or warm-swapping. SystemSoft has written a
version of CardWorks for NT, but I haven't heard if you can change
cards without rebooting. Those laptop mfgs that support NT, like Dell
and Digital, have pretty much altered the OS to allow for these
shortcomings, or written workarounds for most of them.
Should you plan to go ahead, stop by the group and ask around. Some
people who've tried this may have some pointers.
