ThinkPad Zip Drive
Last week I saw an advert for a 'ThinkPad Zip' in a large mail-order
catalogue (Inmac, England). The description was as follows: "Now you
can have an Iomega Zip drive installed in your IBM ThinkPad. The drive
fits into the Ultrabay of the following models: 755CD, 755CDU, 760CD,
760ED,760E, 760ELD, 760LD, 760EL". There was also a picture of this
ThinkPad Zip drive, which looks similar in shape and size to the
ThinkPad Cd-Rom drive.
Upon calling Inmac about this, they could not give me any additional
details whatsoever. They did not even know who made this drive. Nor
did they have this product in stock yet, so could not get the details
off the box for me.
Thereafter, I called both Iomega and IBM, both of whom had no idea of
such a product. Although, Iomega said that it's likely to be made by
one of their partners. And, IBM said that the only 'ThinkPad' proven
internal Zip drive is the VST Zip 100, which is exclusively for the
new ThinkPad 770.
I have also seen an item listed in the Cyberian Outpost Web page
(http://www.cybout.com/cgi-bin/product_info?item=26577) concerning
a VST Zip 100 drive for the IBM ThinkPad notebook computers. However,
there were no details available either there or on VST's Web pages
(http://www2.skyworld.com/cgi-shl/cfml.exe?template=/vsttech/menu.cfm)
on which model ThinkPads this is compatible with.
Currently, I am using the ThinkPad 760CD and am running a Zip drive
off the parallel port. However, this setup occasionally (and
unpredictably) interferes with printing jobs (mostly using HP-5L and
Epsom Stylus 600). So, I'm desperately looking for an alternative.
This 'ThinkPad Zip' seems the ideal solution for me.
So, has anyone heard of this so-called 'ThinkPad Zip'? If so, please
share your experiences.
Any advice, warnings or comments whatsoever are most welcome.
