Re: 701C modem hangs

Hold everything...the Modem cannot be replaced in the 701C since it is built
into a DSP chip on the system board. If you put in a PC card modem, you
will start an entire new set of problems that I don't have time to address.

My suggestion is the following:

REFORMAT THE HARD DRIVE.

Do not install Plus! unless you have a compressed drive. If the drive is
compressed, uncompress it.

Your Bios is fine

My experience with solving problems on the 701C is upgrades from Win 3.1 to
Win/95, plus adding all the goodies is not the way to go. Therefore, back
up your critical data, reformat using the Win/95 floppies, and then
reinstall your applications. This will forgive a lot of "sins" and will
ultimately make your 701C behave.

If you want to play around before you do this, then remove the 701 modem via
control panel...then shut down the machine (power off). Restart the machine
and the modem will be found. If you still have problems, you could call IBM
service. Personally, they are not much help.

Good Luck.

Suggest to him/her to get a new modem, rather than
replace the whole machine. Replacing the entire machine would
be too extreme.
