No, /dev/hdb is correct for this machine. The TP760EL has only one EIDE
controller, and the CD drive is the second (slave) device.
I must admit I installed Linux via NFS (not having the CD drive yet when
installing) so cannot help further. I'd try NFS first before installing
off the HD.
Since Debian has a normal Linux boot floppy, try using this instead
of loadlin. YMMV... I have no idea how the Debian install kernel is
configured.
