  Stupid typo..  Yes, I meant 16-byte.  I should have re-read that before
sending it.  The 8250/16450/16550 all have an 8-bit memory interface.

  If you have sockets already you don't need to.  I didn't have them, and
knew how to install them.  It let me re-use old boards from the XT days.
A buffered COM port really helps an XT keep up with fast modems.  =)

  Yes, the 16550 pinout is the same as the 8250 and 16450.  I said the
16650 [which isn't by NS as far as I know] uses a different pinout.  I
also have heard of one with a 1K FIFO [might have been 2K] but I don't
recall a part number for it.  I think Startech makes them.  I know they
make 2 port and 4 port versions of the 16550 called the 16552 and 16554.
I haven't read anything about them for about 9 months though.
