Hi, don't know how much help this will be, but my I've got a 701c which runs well with a panasonic D740 4x cdrom drive using the supplied card. Its in the top slot, not sure if I've ever had it in the bottom slot. The one thing that stopped it from working was when the 32 bit drivers were enabled (I'm using W95). The internal modem did not work reliably at first, but has since I updated the sound card drivers.
