Bryan Daum's question about 701 batteries reminded me of something else
that's been on my mind lately. A couple of companies (e.g.,
www.powerit.com) sell outboard batteries for laptops (i.e., batteries
which can run your laptop for many hours). However, they are kind of
pricey. In the VCR/camcorder world, there are several companies that
make 12 volt power packs for camcorders at a decent price. For example,
Bescor makes a pack that weights under 3 pounds, comes in a shoulder
pack, has an auto cigar lighter output, and produces 3 amp hours at 12
volts for less that $40, and a 5.5 pounder with 7.2 amp hours for about
$45. (Compare to the TP560 battery, which is 2.2 amp hours.) It seems
to me it *should* be possible to hook one of these to the TP using the
auto adapter, and get lots of extra time (perhaps some lost to
inefficiency of the connection).
So, my question is: Has anyone tried this? If not, can anyone who knows
more about such things than I comment on the plan? BTW, I would just go
ahead and try if I already had the auto adaptor for my TP, since the
battery is so cheap, but I hate to buy the adaptor for the experiment.
