Add one to the Legions of the ThinkPad faithful.
I'm a Navy (LAMPS) pilot who got a ThinkPad 701CS about a month ago. It came
with a 540 HD, 16 megs of RAM and a NiMH battery. It also came with the AC
adapter, floppy drive and associated cable, and I just received a parallel cable
which I had ordered from IBM Direct.
Unfortunately, it didn't include the port replicator (Multiport II ?). Since
this ThinkPad's primary purpose in life will be to program the engine management
computer in my RX-7(http://www.mothers.com/coolcars_cstmr/coolcars_cstmr.html),
the serial port connection is critical to the unit's usefulness to me. In
search of a port replicator, I know that I can buy one direct from IBM for $180,
but before I resign to this addition cost, I want to be certain that it could
not be purchased used. I've been monitoring EBay, and two other auction sites,
but in the last couple of weeks, none have surfaced. I've checked out Xtend's
site, but they don't make a model for the 701's. So the first request from this
ThinkPad Newbie is for any leads on a used port replicator, before I commit to
buying new.
Somewhat along those same line, I'll need a auto adapter, I'd like to find a
used one, but if push come to shove, new Xtend or Essex auto chargers are only
$80-$100.
BTW, I've reread the last year's archives and have already found solutions for a
other concerns.
