What kind of microphone for Thinkpad?

I've purchased 3 different mini microphones for my 360PE now and none of
them work!  The only mic I can get to work is the full-sized musician's
mic with a converter attached.  

I know the other mics work...

Is there some kind of special microphone required for these things?  I
wanted a small one so I could carry it around with me...
