701C Modem: Doesn't work in DOS?

Now this is strange. Tell me if this makes sense to you. My mother, the
owner of a 701C, is supposed to be using her computer to access real estate
information through a 1-800 toll-free service that provides its own
software. The program has the phone number "hard-coded" into the program,
and thus you can't change it so that it will pause between dialing an
outside line (dial 9) and the 1-800 number. Therefore she can't dial into
the service. However, a friend of hers who has not bought a new IBM
Thinkpad (not sure which one) is having trouble connecting to this service
(probably for the same reason, but I don't know) and she called IBM. They
told her (get this) that the modems in IBM TP's don't work in DOS. Now my
mother has called me and told me this is what she figures is wrong with her
computer. I told her that whoever in IBM told her that is wrong, and that
will really help to sell a lot of TP's. I know hardware has some
limitations in DOS, but it's usually a software/driver issue, no? Anyhoo,
I've told her to tell her software supplier to get with the times and
develop a Win95 version of their software and make it a lot more compatible
with various hardware. The program also wouldn't allow her to print from
her Canon BJ-80 printer (which operates on essentially the same driver as
the BJ-70, a very popular portable printer.
Anyone have any thoughts on this? Has anyone else ever been told that TP
modems don't work in DOS?

Thanks
