My ThinkPad 701 has got VERY HOT while charging the battery in
some instances, but it never burned me.

Hmmm... I took my ThinkPad with me to Yosemite last year on a school trip, and
temperatures went down to 25-40øF, and I never had any problems with it,
even in my room (the heater took about a day to start working. <g> ).
