This is a common misconception, so worth addressing. Unlike a multi-scan
CRT, where the resolution can be effectively changed, the pixels on an
LCD screen are fixed in size and position.

If you have a 768 x 1024 screen, then that determines the size and position
of all pixels.

There are only two ways to display a 640 x 480 image on such a screen

1. Display it small in the middle of the panel, but this obviously does
not help the font problem.

2. Stretch the image by duplicating pixels. This function is available
in many notebooks, but it does not work well for text. That's because
unless you can actually double every pixel, you get an uneven effect
from expanding some pixels and not others.

As for changing the font size, read the original message, the author was
talking about cases of old DOS software etc which determines its own fonts.
Only newer software that goes through a logical OS layer providing font
facilities will be sensitive to changing the font size.
