I have not had your problem but have noticed something which is probably
due to the same (unknown to me) cause. I have installed the "battery check"
utility that is listed on the 765D ThinkPad page. A few times it has
complained that there is no battery installed when I boot in a Dock II
or with an adapter plugged it. That utility obviously thinks that the
battery isn't in so I suspect that there is a connection problem somewhere
in the 765D. I have usually shutdown, pulled out the battery, reinserted
it, closed the keyboard, and then it (ususally) boots OK without the warning.

This is under NT4 (SP3) or Warp 4 with FP1 and current BIOS and drivers from
the IBM site.
