Based on my experiences with a 701, you should have no problem
connecting a US TP to the German phone system; the standard (RJ11)
modular jacks are used.  Be aware though that, like other places, you
might run into digital phone systems (in hotels).  Obviously, trying
to connect to one of these is not a good thing.
