Well, I read about this issue a year or two ago. They seemed to think
think that people who used touchpads would never choose a pointing
stick, while pointing stick users didn't really care. My response to
that was that no one ever asked ME!
The pointing stick approach is the only one I've found that allows me
to (effectively) leave my hands (both of them) at the home row. Most
of what I do is text based, whether it is Email or word processing or
even most of my presentation work. The "mouse" use is ancillary. So,
for typing efficiency, I don't want to have to move my hand, mouse
around, then have to move my hand back and make sure it's in the right
place before I can continue with the main event.
A good friend of mine bought a Toshiba with a pointing stick and hated
it. He said that his finger kept slipping off the nub. I gave him one
of my "cat's tongue" TrackPoint caps and he's been fine ever since. On
his desktop machine, he has a touchpad built into his keyboard. Plus,
he has one of those new-ish Cross pen pads.
Anyway, I am pleased to see that there is a choice in notebook
computer with pointing stick. I've seen not only IBM and Toshiba, but
a couple of other fairly reasonable brands with them. I still expect
to buy an IBM again next time (which I don't expect to be that many
more months), but I like seeing competition in the market. And, who
knows, maybe Toshiba or someone will come out with a real "killer"
notebook for a LOT less money than the comparable IBM that will be too
good a deal to pass up. (Without the pointing stick, it would be very
easy to pass up.)
Good luck!
