ThinkPad 701C display problem

My ThinkPad 701C (Win95, 24M RAM) returned from IBM service with a note
that the BIOS was upgraded, and with three new problems: the system couldn't
find the modem, it couldn't detect the zip drive connected to the parallel
port, and the display showed dithering. The first two problems are now
corrected; the third remains, and IBM refuses to fix it on the grounds that
this is not the original software. I'm hoping to find some help here.

My display is TFT, set for High Color (16 bit) at 640X480. Solid colors
display correctly but areas of gradual transition show lots of dithering -
instead of smooth transition between different shades of a color, there are
patches of solid colors with dots on the borderlines between them.

I have already tried reinstalling Windows and updating the display driver
(to Chips & Technologies, Accelerator, v. 3.0.3).
