It could be the BIOS, where it interprets the variable you input for the screen blanking incorrectly,
and goes back to a default of 10 minutes. Try to speak to the highest level you can at IBM
if they still don't care.
As nice as the 770 is, it seems that there are a lot of screen-related problems (like this one, the OS/2
Warp driver problem, etc).
