As far as I can tell if the modem isn't actually running you have
all the resources available for sound.  Even at 28k8 it does slow
the sound down - mine (in a 755CE) takes a couple seconds to emit
the first sound, it looks like it has to load more software from
the hard disk to get the sound going in the first place - after
that it's reasonably ok.
