Well, here's my speculation. I have no evidence that this is taking place
in this particular case, though I have seen vendors do this sort of thing
before.
A) The 770 requires faster RAM.
B) The 600 does not require faster RAM.
C) The 600 will operate just fine with faster RAM.
D) IBM does not want to have the added costs of stocking two different
parts when one (the faster one) will do.
E) IBM has chosen to pass along their savings to the customer in the form
of one higher price for the more costly RAM.
Of course, E could be wrong if the yields are such that they are getting
tons of the faster chips out of the process and the supply/demand curve is
"kinda goofy".
