I believe that, as part of the PCMCIA driver, it looks for link, and if it
loses it, it'll default to whatever the default connector on the PCMCIA
card is. Does your card support multiple topologies?
** Yes the 589 supports twisted pair and coax. I use coax at home -
perhaps it defaults back to TP.

Don't bother with LILO -- you've got Windows; so long as it's not NT, I
** Yes I have windoze, but on another hard disk. The Linux HD has a 32MB
dos partition and a linux partition. But it won't boot either on it's own.
highly recommend reading up on Loadlin. It lets you boot to DOS, the load
the kernel using a command such as
c:\loadlin\loadlin.exe c:\loadlin\vmlinuz root=/dev/hda2 ro vga=3
which you can easily throw into your autoexec, and choose via the ol'
config.sys menu feature. (In essence, what the above line does is
executes loadlin.exe, loads the vmlinuz kernel, tells the kernel that
Linux's root is /dev/hda2, mounts the root as read only (recommended), and
sets vga to mode three (optional, but puts more lines on the console
screen).
