It appears that there is now a FREE (unaccelerated) X-Server for some
Neomagic chips available. I just came across the following web page:

There are positive reports for the following ThinkPads:

IBM ThinkPad 380D under Linux (also successfully drives external monitor) 
IBM ThinkPad 380ED with NeoMagic 128ZV under Linux 
IBM ThinkPad 380XD under Linux 
IBM ThinkPad 535X with NeoMagic 128XD under Linux and GNU/Linux 
IBM ThinkPad 560X with NeoMagic 128XD under FreeBSD-2.2.5R
