I don't think I'm the person Paul had in mind, but I have been using vi for
at least 15 years. During the early part of that period, I was known to
edit troff text formatting language, and produced nice documents with the
combination. Even then, I preferred to use Emacs for text editing,
including MINCE on CP/M-80 (Mince Is Not Complete Emacs) along with its
companion, Scribble (subset of Scribe). In any case, I have not done any of
that sort of thing (vi/troff) in over five years.
Although I now use a fancy W95 based word processor (one I hate, since
hardly anyone uses Lotus Word Pro), I still use vi (from MKS toolkit) for
editing nearly any plain text file on my PCs. I've downloaded a Win32
version of GNU Emacs that just needs some of my time for installation. On
UNIX systems, I tend to use vi (since it's always there), but prefer to use
GNU Emacs.
BTW, fancy windowing word processors are certainly easier, but I am not
convinced that I have any greater level of control over the finished product.
