End of Interactive Support
Intel is announcing the end of interactive support for the Intel® PR440FX Motherboard. See the End of Interactive Support Announcement for details.

The Intel® PR440FX Motherboard supports 2.1 V to 3.3 V Pentium® Pro processors operating at 180 MHz and 200 MHz. For motherboards with two processors installed, a voltage regulator module (VRM) is required for the second processor. The Pentium Pro processor integrates an internal nonblocking second-level (L2) cache and cache controller. The motherboard supports processors with 256 KB or 512 KB L2 cache. Changing the processor requires changes in several jumper settings. The Intel PR440FX Motherboard also supports the Pentium II OverDrive® processor.

Warning: Processors not specifically listed by type and rated speed may have requirements that are not supported by the motherboard's design. Use of unsupported processors may result in improper operation, damage to the motherboard or processor, or reduced product life.

The following table shows the processor steppings that have been qualified with the Intel PR440FX Motherboard:

Qualified Processor Steppings
Speed/Cache Size Qualified Steppings
S-Spec Manufacturing Stepping Cache Stepping
180/256 SY031 sA1 B
SY039 sA1 A
200/256 SY032 sA1 B
SY040 sA1 B
SL22T sB1 B
SL22V sB1 B
200/512 SY048 sA1 B

Intel PR440FX Motherboards with BIOS versions 1.00.02.DI0 or earlier cannot be reliably operated with sB1 stepping Pentium Pro processors. The failure symptoms include a) no video accompanied by a blinking power LED, b) failure to recognize the second processor in a dual processor configuration, or c) random system crashes. If BIOS version 1.00.02.DI0 is installed, you may be able to upgrade to the latest BIOS version; this must be done with a single processor installed. If the system has two processors installed, remove the second processor before attempting the upgrade. If the BIOS upgrade procedure fails, or if BIOS version 1.00.01.DI0 is installed, replace the sB1 stepping processor with an sA1 stepping processor and then upgrade to the latest BIOS version. Once the BIOS upgrade is complete you may reinstall the sB1 stepping processor(s).

Type of second Pentium Pro processor that should be used on the Intel PR440FX Motherboard
The second Pentium Pro processor on the Intel PR440FX Motherboard must be the same speed and asecond-level cache size as the first processor. The second processor must also be the same stepping as, or no more than one stepping higher or lower than the primary processor. In the following table, only the combinations of primary and secondary processors marked "YES" are qualified for use in dual processor Intel PR440FX Motherboards.

When the Intel VRM need to be used
Motherboards with two processors require a VRM. There are two types of VRMs: 5V and 12V. The Intel PR440FX Motherboard supports 5V modules. Please refer to the Intel PR440FX Technical Product Specification and Motherboard Specification Update for details.
