A further problem is that they actually take a perceptibly longer time to render each line of text.My guess is that this is probably because of anti-aliased fonts. Are they still slow if you disable XFT through the toolkit environment variables? If so, perhaps further investigation is warranted. A terminal application with slow or erratic scrolling is extremely distracting to me.
