Replacing VRAM

Is it possible to replace the WD90c24 chipset with the WD90c31 chipset or
replace it with any other chipset that has 2MB of VRAM? I want to be able
to drive an external monitor at 1024x768 resolution in 16 bit color directly
from the notebook.
