I have had exactly the same problem. I have not solved it, but I can give
more info. It started with an occasional reboot when I exited windows.
In my case, the Trackpoint was not involved. It gradually got worse until
eventually it rebooted every time I exited windows. I called IBM support.
They were very supportive, but had little in the way of constructive
suggestions. They said that they had about 11 calls on the same problem.
They had one user send his machine in. They tried re-installing a minimal
setup and the problem did not go away. The only solution they found was a
complete low-level reformat of the hard-disk. They had no explanation. I
reformatted my disk, and re-installed all my software. The problem was
cured for about two weeks, and then it started again. Defraging does not
help. For some unexplained reason, the problem seems to be moderating
lately. My machine is now rebooting with every fourth exit from windows.
I have encountered no unpleasant side effects, nor correlation with the
use of any particular software (other than windows, of course).
I had resigned myself to the fact that the only solution was migration
to a real operating system. Unfortunately, my 170 meg disk is already
full, the new operating systems are huge, and the disk upgrade to 360meg
costs $1300 from IBM (gasp!). I'm sure that any suggestions regarding any of
these problems would be valuable for lots of us.
