Sean, just to give you an update. I recieved my 3Comm card and with much
hassle have got it installed and working. Fortunatly, we have a great tech
support guy in my department and he handled the whole thing. I actually
couldn't begin to tell you what he did. I do know, however, that we
originally loaded it through my regular config.sys file and it just took too
much time to boot up - several minutes before it ran through all of the
drivers. Also, DOS ram was in the lower 500 k range. (We have some special
problems here at Penn State because I wanted to be able to use the
University net system and it uses some rather antiquated and bulky drivers.)
To make a long story short, we decided to use three boot files in the
config.sys: Normal (PCMCIA drivers and WFWG), Net (3Comm drivers, PCMCIA
drivers and WFWG - but WFWG not used as a server), and Games. This setup
seems to be working fine.
Also, we have not been able to figure out yet how to get the 3Comm driver to
recognize the ports in the replicator. I have had to load the 3Comm card in
the TP. Using EasyPlay, this was no problem. It recognized the 3Comm card by
name in slot 4 (or 3) but of course doesn't have the information to
configure the card. I would like to leave the 3Comm card in the replicator
and not have to carry it in the TP as the only place I use the card is at
work. So our tech support guy says he is going to try and work on this.
Maybe IBM will come out with an updated version of EasyPlay that will
support the 3Comm card. That would be nice. And then again, maybe it will
take until Microsoft comes out with "Chicago" where (hopefully) all of these
kinds of problems will go away.
BTW, great job on the mailing list. I find it extremely helpful and
interesting!
Rick
