Life span is more a function of charge/discharge cycles.  Most NiMh
batteries have an average charge/discharge life of 350-500 cycles.  Train it
well and you should get several years out of it.  Train it poorly and you'll
buy a new in no time.

IMHO you should follow the rule: Never charge your battery until it is fully
discharged and never stop charging it until it is fully charged.  If you're
'in-between' the charge,  and are going from battery to AC, either turn off
the charge circuit (and continue to run on battery), run the discharge
cycle, or remove the battery to prevent the charge cycle from starting again.
