+-------------------------------------------------------------------+

The ThinkPad(R) 360PE portable notebook pen computer system with a
color display offers advanced function at a low price. Just 6.8
pounds, and with the same styling and modular design that have made
the ThinkPad notebook systems so popular, this new ThinkPad system
supports the pen-based application environment and features a 16-bit
internal audio card to enable certain audio applications.

The distinct advantage of pen interface for a mobile worker is that
the ThinkPad 360PE can take the place of a paper system in many work
situations. Unlike a keyboard, the pen is not obtrusive in nature
when used in front of a customer or in a group meeting -- take notes
as if on paper. Also seen as benefits in a pen-based application
environment, an on-board math co-processor and 8KB cache come
standard with the system. Add to this the powerful processing,
customer-installable memory and hard disk drives, PCMCIA
expandability, auto configurability, and sophisticated power
management functions, and you have an affordable computer to suit
many needs.

The ThinkPad 360PE STN Dual Scan Side-lit LCD color display supports
pen-based applications via an electromagnetic "batteryless"
untethered digitizer. The digitizer offers an additional human
interface with the pen notebook system.

In addition to the convenience of portable computing, the ThinkPad
360PE gives you the option of using an alternate keyboard, monitor,
and mouse -- at home, at the office, or another location -- to
replicate the feel of a desktop system. Features that allow you to
do this include:

o PCMCIA card slot that can accommodate two Type II or one Type III
   PC card, standard Release 2.01

o Battery- or AC-operated

o External IBM peripherals supported: keyboard, mouse, printer, and
numeric pad through serial or enhanced parallel ports, and SVGA
   monitor with simultaneous display capability

o Optional docking station or port replicator

                              Machine Planned Single

IBM ThinkPad 360PE Pen-Based Environment

The ThinkPad 360PE provides two types of interface for the mobile
worker -- keyboard and pen. The great advantage of pen interface for
the mobile worker is that the ThinkPad 360PE can take the place of
the paper system for most workers. Unlike a keyboard, the pen is not
obtrusive when used in front of a customer or in a group meeting. It
enables the mobile worker to take notes as if on paper.
Additionally, the pen input creates an electronic image that may be
stored, transmitted, or shared with others like a computer file.

In many instances, it may be necessary to obtain another
participant's confirmation, such as a client's signature after taking
an order. The ThinkPad 360PE enables signature capture that aids in
quicker paperless transaction processing. In addition, the
pen-enabled ThinkPad 360PE has the ability to transform printed
letters into computer-recognizable text.

IBM ThinkPad 360PE Audio Environment

The ThinkPad 360PE comes standard with a 16-bit internal audio card,
providing support for many audio-capable applications.

IBM ThinkPad 360PE Communication Environment

The ThinkPad 360PE provides communication application integrity by
not entering into a suspend or hibernation mode while the internal
modem or PCMCIA modem option is in busy status. When certain
communication PCMCIA cards are used simultaneously in two Type II
PCMCIA slots, one may experience some cable interference requiring
use of only one communication card at a time.

When the ThinkPad 360PE system is used with either the IBM ThinkPad
Dock I or IBM ThinkPad Dock II, for the comfort and convenience of
the user, the height of the system should be adjusted or an external
keyboard should be used. The IBM Keyboard/Mouse Connector accessory
is required when attaching an external keyboard to the system via the
external input device port.

operating systems and applications utilizing large memory with
optional 4MB, 8MB, and 16MB IC DRAM cards. Up to 20MB of system
memory is possible with these options.

Communications: The ThinkPad 360PE system enables connectivity
expansion, such as LAN through the IBM Token-Ring 16/4 Credit Card
Adapter and the IBM PCMCIA Adapter for Ethernet, and host connection
through the IBM 3270 Emulation Adapter. These connectivity solutions
provide the synergy of uniting two customer assets -- portable
computing and networking. They enable the portable users to access
the applications and data available on their network systems.

The ThinkPad 360PE system allows users who are currently not using
computer power to take advantage of applications for collection and
transmission of data to other systems and LANs to bring reference
material immediately to hand when in the field.

PCMCIA: The ThinkPad 360PE system is designed with a PCMCIA slot
that accommodates two Type II or one Type III PC card. The IBM
ThinkPad 360PE conforms to the PCMCIA PC Card Standard Release 2.01
and the PCMCIA Card and Socket Services Specification Release 2.0,
dated November 1992. This emerging standard allows for the insertion
of many devices, such as mass storage, memory, and communications.

The PCMCIA Utility Diskette comes with the system unit and contains
PCMCIA Socket Services Release 2.0 for DOS, PCMCIA Card Services
Release 2.0 for DOS, and PCMCIA Socket Services Release 2.0 for OS/2.
Convenient power management function is provided for some IBM PCMCIA
cards (for example, modem, 3270, token-ring, Ethernet). For example,
when the user is operating with communications application and PCMCIA
card, after suspend/resume operation, the user does not need to
restart the operating system or communications application.

PC Card Director: PC Card Director is provided in a utility diskette
for DOS, Microsoft Windows, and OS/2. PC Card Director helps a user
to get status and information on PCMCIA cards installed in the
system. In addition, on Microsoft Windows, it can register an
application program for PCMCIA cards and execute them automatically.

Auto Configurator and Memory Device Driver: Auto Configurator and
Memory Device Driver enables supported PCMCIA cards by sensing them
automatically. A listing of supported PCMCIA cards by Auto
Configurator and Memory Device Driver is available from IBM.

Advanced Power Management

Power Management: The IBM ThinkPad 360PE system provides a power
management system that is almost transparent to the user. The highly
advanced power management hardware and software provides longer
battery life. Automatic and manual power mode
(standby/suspend/hibernation) operations offer energy conservation
resulting in reduced battery consumption.

The IBM ThinkPad 360PE system also provides a ThinkPad Features
Program allowing the user to control power usage of the computer.
The Fuel-Gauge Program shows remaining battery power. When using the
external power, the battery status field indicates whether the
battery pack is fully charged or still charging.

The ThinkPad Features Program allows the user to preset power
management mode for battery operation: low, medium or high
performance. Power modes only affect the computer when the battery
pack is in use. The user can select settings for component timeouts
and select the processor speed. The timeout setting is for shut off
of certain components temporarily when there has been no activity for
a preset amount of time. The timeout options are:

o Suspend timer -- A timeout places the computer in suspend mode.
In suspend mode, the computer is off and the information remains
   in memory.

o LCD off timer -- A timeout is set to turn the LCD off if there is
no activity for a specified amount of time.

o Hard Disk -- A hard disk drive timeout can be set if there is no
activity for a specified amount of time.

o Processor speed -- This timeout option allows the user to select
the speed of the processor. The computer will run faster at
higher speed settings; however, lower speed settings allow the
computer to run longer on a battery charge. The processor runs at
full speed when busy, and slow down when the computer is idle.

The following power modes can be initiated automatically or manually:

o Standby mode -- Entered for short periods of time, such as when
you are having a short conversation.

o Suspend mode -- Entered when you are going to be away from the
computer for short periods of time.

o Hibernation mode -- Entered when you leave your office, then
   return the following day.

Limitations

PCMCIA

o PC Card point enablers can write directly to the hardware,
bypassing defined interface for the Socket and Card Services.
These point enablers may interfere with other device drivers that
use the defined interface. This can result in problems that are
hard to diagnose. Users must ensure that their specific
environment is not affected by PC Card point enablers that bypass
   defined interfaces.

o PCMCIA adapter (PC Card) diagnostics program usually does not
support slot number greater than two. To diagnose a suspected
failing PCMCIA adapter installed in the ThinkPad Port Replicator
Model I or IBM ThinkPad Dock II (slot number three or four), for
test purposes, install the suspected adapter in a slot number one
or two of the system PCMCIA slot and then run the diagnostic
   program.

o "Point Enabler" (one of the device drivers of the PCMCIA adapter)
does not support slot number greater than two. The point enabler
cannot be used for a PCMCIA adapter (PC Card) installed in the IBM
ThinkPad Port Replicator Model I or IBM ThinkPad Dock II (slot
   number three or four).

o High Speed PCMCIA Data/Fax Modem V.32bis achieves transmission of
19.2Kbps with the applications that use BIOS for communication to
a serial port. Many applications that bypass the BIOS can
approach the theoretical limit of 57.6Kbps.

Video

o Video capture adapter, which requires VGA pass-through (video
pass-through, VESA bus) is not supported by the ThinkPad 360PE
when it is used with the IBM ThinkPad Dock I or the IBM ThinkPad
   Dock II.

o The TV Tuner Pack and Analog-to Digital Video Converter Adapter
optional features are not supported on the ThinkPad 360PE.

o If the audio device driver is disabled, periodic noise will be
heard with some applications (such as Storyboard(TM) Live). To
avoid the noise, the recommendation is to enable the audio feature
(audio feature is enabled by the default setting):

   - Enable the audio device by PS2.EXE (DOS) or ThinkPad Feature
      (Windows 3.1, OS/2)

   - Install the audio feature by following the instructions
"Installing the Audio Device Driver" in the User's Guide.

o The IBM 8516 touch screen color display requires the
TrackPoint(TM) II to be disabled before connecting it to the
external display connector. To disable the TrackPoint II, follow
the instructions provided in the ThinkPad 360PE DX2-DSTN with
   Digitizer User's Guide.

Passwords

o The supervisor password is not supported by ThinkPad 360PE.

o The hard disk drive (HDD) password (HDP) is not supported when the
HDD is installed in either the IBM ThinkPad Dock I or the IBM
ThinkPad Dock II. The HDD password must be removed while the HDD
is directly (without a ThinkPad Dock) installed in the computer.
After the removal of the HDD password, the drive can be used with
the IBM ThinkPad Dock I or the IBM ThinkPad Dock II. The HDD is
secured by the security lock and tie-down capability when used
with the IBM ThinkPad Dock I or the IBM ThinkPad Dock II.

o The password prompt is not displayed when the computer resumes
from "partial" suspend mode while it is attached to the IBM
ThinkPad Dock I or the IBM ThinkPad Dock II. However, you need to
enter a correct password to continue.

Battery Pack

o When the ThinkPad 750 NiMH battery pack is used, the remaining
power (hours and percentage) is displayed. However, when the
ThinkPad 360 NiMH battery pack is used, only the remaining power
in terms of percentages is displayed.

o Battery discharge function of ThinkPad Features is not supported.

Considerations when an audio card is installed:

o When audio software is used (MIDI player, for example), the CPU
   speed should be set "fast."

o When OS/2 2.11 is installed, audio functions are supported in OS/2
native environment only. Audio support in the WIN-OS/2(TM)
sessions of OS/2 is not provided.

o When OS/2 Warp is installed, MIDI function is not supported.

o When using any audio related AT(R) card (Action Media II, for
example), the recommendation is to use an audio device driver that
   comes with the AT card.

o To avoid the noise associated with some applications, it is
recommended that you enable the audio feature.

Security, Auditability, and Control

Standard Security Features

o Passwords

   - A Power-on password (POP) protects the system from unauthorized
use. If a POP is set, the password prompt appears:

-- Each time the system is turned on

-- When the system is returned to normal operation from suspend
mode by opening the computer notebook or by pressing the Fn
key. If the return to normal operation is caused by the
timer or an incoming call through modem, the password prompt
does not appear. The LCD remains blank until the correct
         password is entered.

   - The HDD password is a feature of the systems. It is used to
protect HDD data. Once HDP is set, data on the HDD cannot be
accessed without the correct HDP. Because the HDP is stored in
the HDD, the data remains protected even if the HDD is removed
to another system. The HDP password prompt appears:

-- Each time the system is turned on
-- When the system is returned to normal operation from suspend
         mode

o Security Locking Lever

The locking lever can be used to:

   - Prevent removal of the computer

   - Prevent the use of the system by securing the keyboard and
      internal optional features

   - Secure the HDD

The lever cover is used to shield the locking lever in the
computer to prevent removal of internal resources (HDD, memory,
   FDD)

You can use the hole in the locking lever to route a cable or
chain and lock the system to a table or desk, for example:

o You can use the hook on the HDD locking mechanism to leash with a
user-selected padlock and chain or cable.

Security Optional Features

o Security Base: The security base acts as a cradle for the system,
   which serves as physical security:

   - Bolts the system to the desk
   - Keylocks the system in the security base with the HDD
   - Provides a locking mechanism -- padlock is user's choice
   - Keylocks the Port Replicator Models I and II in the security
base with the PCMCIA cards (Model I)
   - Protects removal of HDD
   - Protects access to the screw holes in the system
   - Protects access to the system expansion and I/O connectors

End users are responsible for evaluation, selection and,
implementation of security features, administrative procedures, and
appropriate controls in application systems and communications
facilities.
