750Cs

The only 50MHz Thinkpads (I believe) are the 500 (subnotebook & not very
upgradable) and the 755C, which is a fantastic laptop, but $7000+. The 750Cs
is a steal at 1000 pounds IF it's fast enough to suit your needs for a while.
It's a $4000 laptop with only 4MB RAM (add $1100 if it's an IBM IC DRAM card,
$700-$800 if it's OEM) . The display is dual scan color, which is limited to
256 color support: not the greatest, but it is color & it's a 9.5" display. I
don't know about the 200MB HDD. I believe they only come in 170 & 340, and to
go beyond that you would need to send it to IBM for a BIOS upgrade (or go with
a PCMCIA drive). The processor is not upgradable.

Subject: Newbie alert - price/upgrade advice

Currently I'm toying with buying a s/h 750Cs 20MB RAM 200MB (170MB
surely) HD for 1000 pounds sterling. Anyone want to comment if that's
a good price or not? I really want the RAM but I'd probably get a
bigger HD.

Originally I was offered a 50Mhz machine (I forget which one) and an MCA
one (no good to me) and I'm a bit concerned about the speed of the 750.
I had a wade through the archives but couldn't see a definitive answer to
"Can I upgrade the CPU or make it go faster some other way?" If anyone
could help I'd appreciate it.

As for me, I'm a System and S/W Engineer for BT, in London, UK. I'm not
that knowledgeable on PCs esp. portables as a) that's hardware b) that's
not primarily Unix hardware.

Cheers,

Robb
