Right now for these PowerPC thinkpad you have a choice between Windows NT
3.51 or AIX 4.1 or no operating system at all (yeah I'll take that option).

The Power Series Program Pack CD-ROM ships with each system unit and
contains the software applications for AIX and Windows NT listed
below. With the exception of the CD-ROM based system manuals, these
applications are normally part of the standard AIX or Windows NT
preload. However, this CD-ROM is also provided for backup purposes.
o Essentials!
o Power, Performance, Potential
o CompuServe WinCIM Power Series Edition (NT only)
o Introducing your IBM ThinkPad Power Series 820 (NT only)
Essentials! is a Windows application which contains a customer
registration program, a catalog of supported options and adapters and
an overview of the IBM HelpWare(R) support coverage.
Power, Performance, Potential is a multimedia presentation which uses
three dimensional audio and artwork-quality graphics to introduce the
user to key Power Series technology and marketing messages. Since
this application consumes a significant amount of hardfile space, IBM
has also provided a "Remove PPP" utility which allows the user to
reclaim this space for other applications.
For users who also purchase a modem with their Power Series system, a
personalized version of the CompuServe WinCIM application is provided
for quick and easy access to the CompuServe Power Series forum.
Power Series product announcements, updates of system software,
device drivers and other important information will be provided on
this key forum which focuses on the needs of application developers
and large corporate users. This software includes information about
obtaining a complementary CompuServe subscription worth one month of
basic services and a $15 usage credit.
In an effort to reduce desktop clutter and leverage powerful
multimedia presentation tools within Windows NT, IBM has provided a
CD-ROM-based system manual. Introducing Your IBM ThinkPad Power
Series 820 provides an audio/video overview of the features of the
new IBM ThinkPad Power Series 820 systems.
If a user elects to remove these applications from the hardfile or in
the event of a hardfile failure, IBM has also provided additional
software on the Program Pack to re-create the original preload image
on the hardfile.
Carrying Cases
With the IBM ThinkPad Power Series 820, you also get a Personal
Carrying Cases for ThinkPad catalog by Port, Inc. The catalog
features a special line of cases designed to comfortably carry the
IBM ThinkPad. The cases offer protection against common drops and
bumps, with most offering a unique shock-absorbing system that
provides greater protection than simple foam padding. Cases are
available in a variety of sizes and styles to satisfy individual
needs and tastes. You can order the cases through IBM or at the
original place of purchase or directly from Port, Inc.
These products are solely a Port, Inc., offering. IBM does not
provide any warranty, including any implied warranties, for these
products.

Built-in connectivity and scalability are designed to support today's
complex business applications with extendibility to future
requirements in hardware or software.
Windows NT Workstation 3.51 (PowerPC Edition) Preload Stack: In
addition to supporting powerful 32-bit operating systems in the Power
Series product family, IBM has developed a unique manufacturing
process for preloading each of these operating systems and a variety
of other system and third party applications.
Within the Power Series program group, IBM has provided a multimedia
presentation which presents an overview of the Power Series product
family. This program group also contains an online registration
application, a catalog of supported options and adapters and an
overview of the world-wide IBM HelpWare service and support program.
For users that also purchase a modem with their Power Series system,
IBM has also provided a personalized version of the CompuServe WinCIM
application to provide quick and easy access to important information
on this world-wide information service network.
In an effort to reduce desktop clutter and leverage the power of
today's multimedia presentation tools, IBM provides, within the
Window NT preload, an interface to system multimedia documentation
contained on the Power Series Program Pack CD-ROM.
Within a separate IBM Human-Centered Experience program group, IBM
has provided a graphical interface to the Human-Centered Experience
CD-ROM (when available). Supporting both the "Getting Started with
the Human-Center(TM)" multimedia tour and "Installing the
Human-Centered Experience" installation utility, this feature of the
preloaded Windows NT desktop should facilitate ease-of-access to
these new interface technologies.

Compatibility: The IBM ThinkPad Power Series 820 system is designed
to be compatible with the PowerPC Reference Platform(TM)
Specification.
IBM ThinkPad Power Series 820 is designed to maintain compatibility
with standard PCMCIA adapters. For an industry standard PCMCIA
adapter to work in the IBM ThinkPad Power Series 820, device driver
support is required. You must determine if the operating system
chosen supports a particular device, or if the supplier of the device
provides the necessary drivers.
The IBM ThinkPad Power Series 820 system contains setup/diagnostics
software in its Flash ROM called "Easy-Setup".
Easy-Setup allows you to set:
o Passwords
o Start-up sequence for the drives
o SCSI IDs for the SCSI-2 adapter and the internal hard disk
Easy-Setup also runs the diagnostics through a graphical user
interface.

Limitations
o G10 Graphics with Motion Video Adapter is factory installed with a
640x480 TFT display only. The IBM ThinkPad Power Series 850 is
recommended for motion video capability with 800x600 TFT display.
o G10 Graphics with Motion Video Adapter is not available as an
after market option.
o Video connector cable-box, which is shipped with G10 Graphics with
Motion Video Adapter, is required for motion video input and
output.
o G10 Graphics with Motion Video Adapter supports NTSC video input
and output, and PAL video input only.
o G10 Graphics with Motion Video is supported in the operating
system environment only. Support may vary by operating system.
o This system has limitations in the use of the DCBZ and MTMSR
instructions. Programmers should consult the programming
guidelines area of the IBM Power Series Systems Products and
Solutions home page on the World Wide Web,
URL:http//www.austin.ibm.com/powrinfo.html, before using either
instruction.
o The IBM ThinkPad Power Series 820 system has a total of three DIMM
memory slots per system; one or two are used for base memory.
Using 8MB or 16MB DIMM optional feature cards makes up to 48MB of
system memory possible.
o Audio functions are supported only in the operating system
environment. Audio support may vary by operating system.
o The power management function is implemented in the operating
system environment and will affect the expected battery life.
o The system is designed so you can install or remove a PCMCIA card
without turning off the system, if the PCMCIA card and operating
system selected support this function. Refer to the PCMCIA card
instructions.
o When the system is working under some operating systems, removal
and installation of a PCMCIA card may not be supported during the
power-on state.
o When installing two Type II PCMCIA communications cards in the
PCMCIA slot, there may be some cable interference that allows only
one card to be used.
o PC Card point enablers may write directly to the hardware,
bypassing Socket and Card Services. Writing directly to the
hardware may cause problems that cannot be anticipated. Point
enablers may interfere with Client Device Drivers that do
communicate with Socket and Card Services. Additional testing in
your specific environments is recommended.
o Maximum data transfer rate of the built-in, double-speed CD-ROM
drive is approximately 300KBps when used with the IBM ThinkPad
Power Series 820.
o The IBM keyboard/mouse connector cable is required when attaching
an external keyboard to the system via the external input device
port.
o When running AIX with a tablet instead of the TrackPoint III in
the AIXwindows(R) Environment, execute (rmdev -1 mouse0) at the
command line before starting the AIXwindows Environment.
o Device drivers for x86 systems, supplied with PCMCIA cards, will
not execute on this system. You must insure that PowerPC device
drivers are available for the card.
Suspend Mode Operational Considerations: The system can enter
suspend mode when using the PCMCIA card with one of the following
operating systems:
o IBM AIX Version 4 for Clients
o Windows NT Workstation 3.51 (PowerPC Edition)
Note: Removing or installing PCMCIA cards during suspend mode is not
recommended. Also, the suspend mode capabilities are operating
system dependent.

Security, Auditability, and Control
Standard Security Features
o Passwords
- A power-on password (POP) helps protect the system from
unauthorized use. If a POP is set, the password prompt
appears:
-- Each time the system is turned on
-- When the system is returned to normal operation from suspend
mode if implemented by the operating system
- A supervisor password provides a higher level of security than
the POP. The supervisor password helps protect the system
functions from being used by unauthorized users and helps
protect the hardware configuration from unauthorized
modification. If a supervisor password has been set, the
system will prompt the user to enter a password when trying to
access configuration or start up sequence sub-menus of
Easy-Setup.
o The user can connect the hook on the locking mechanism to a leash
with a user-selected padlock and chain or cable.
o The system is Vital Product Data (VPD) enabled. VPD is a software
system identification method.
World Trade Considerations: The IBM ThinkPad Power Series 820 system
supports an icon-based interface that eliminates the need for
National Language translation. To configure the system, you select
icons from an easily understandable menu.
National Language Support is also dependent on the operating system
used. Refer to the operating system manuals to determine support for
a particular country.
User management is responsible for evaluation, selection and
implementation of security features, administrative procedures and
appropriate controls in application systems and communications
facilities.
