Viking Platinum 16MB cards

Recently, I posted about a problem I was having with a Viking Platinum 16MB
card (I have a 755C/75MHz/540MB HD). When I plugged in the card, the machine
recognized the full 20MB, but then gave an error code and hung. I then tried
another card, with the same result. Various attempts to correct the problem,
including upgrading the bios and booting with and without parity checking
enabled, failed to help. I suspected that there was a problem with the memory
socket, and since the machine was still under warranty, I had the dealer send
the machine to IBM to be checked. Two days later, the machine came back from
IBM with a clean bill of health (they did not have a Viking card, but tried IBM
memory with no problems). After much wrangling with Viking over the phone, an
un-named medium level manager-type person admitted that they had been receiving
a number of complaints about the cards recently, and he thought that a bad lot
of cards may have been shipped. To Vikings credit, however, they did manage to
ship me a working card within the week (arrived today).

I thought the folks on this list would like to know that there are apparently
some bad Viking Platinum cards on the shelves. Viking does know about the
problem, but I do not know if they plan on doing a recall of the bad cards.

Stu Feld
