The reason I did not reply to your message was that the solution I used 
was posted in this mailing list the same day. 

The way to do the is to boot into dos and run the PS2 MODE3X ON command
after this use loadlin to boot linux. You may also need to patch the file
/usr/src/linux/arch/i386/boot/setup.S to make use of all 37 lines on the 
display.
