homologate is an unusual word, but an old one. From
OED-2, the meaning that applies is 1b
...
Its use in this context seems wrong. I don't know who at IBM
loves long words without quite understanding them :-) There is
a lot to be said for plain language!
Homologate and homologation are well-accepted terms in modem standards
jargon. They are probably used in other areas of international product
development as well. They are technical terms and it doesn't much
matter what the OED says about their non-technical meanings. The OED may
say something about "homology" too, but what it says probably wouldn't
shed much light on what a mathemetician means by "homology". And its
definitions of "stack" or "tree" probably wouldn't be of much help in
reading a computer science text. :-)
