That's a false dichotomy. Its like saying "Because IBM
charges so much for parts, they want you to spend your money on parts
instead of on more thinkpads."
Compuserve is just another way for IBM to make a buck. Given
this information, my guess is that they milk this for whatever they
can get, then put the files you need onto an FTP site after some
period of time (to keep y'all from catching on and getting *too*
pissed off).
On an individual basis, its not that much $ per person,
but on a collective basis--I bet IBM makes a nice little chunk of
change. I'm sure their view of it is that most people aren't wise
to how they benefit from this presumed strategy and the marginal
difference to the consumer is *not* going to affect his/her future
purchase of a thinkpad.
Look at me--few things made me more pissed off than their
unsupported battery life claims on th 750C, yet I bought another TP.
I suspect that for all IBM's foibles, the vast majority of ThinkPad
owners are happy with their purchase and will likely purchase another
one someday.
