Not good...

I believe 301 is the system board lobotomy message.

That would explain the 0KB message when she's supposedly got 8MB installed.

You may want to call 800-772-2227 and explain the situation to the tech rep.
IBM's a big company, there actually may be a service center near your
friend.  I doubt she'll get a 24hr turnaround, tho.
