if you do this, keep the volume on the cd rom very low & amplify the sound with 
the thinkpad volume control.  you don't want to send an amplified signal into 
the 'audio in' or 'mic' port.  it'll probably never sound as good as just 
plugging speakers into the cd rom, but that should help.
