TP365E review
Hi!
I've had a chance to work with a TP365E model for a day and a half.
Its a 586 100Mhz 10.4"TFT model 8M Ram and 540M HD.
I've worked the past 2.5 years exclusively with 750, 750C, 360, 360Cs models
(i.e. also as my desktop). Thus, my earlier experience stems from these models.
Based on the specs I was really entusiastic on the 365E model.
My initial expressions were quite dissapointing though. It was not an
incremetal improvement to the 360 mode as I had expected. The design is not
modular, the HD, battery, floppy or memory expansions are not compatible
with the 750/360 series. Further the unit seemed not to be any faster that
my 486/33Mhz 360. The slow performace was though due to the slow processor
speeed setting that was enabled. Below, I enlist some observations on the
365E model. I do not include any specs as they should be avalable from your
dealer or from www.
Frame:
- better pcmcia cover than in 360/750
- the rear cover for Crt etc is difficult to operate
- the power switch is had to be pushed really hard to get the unit on/off
Display:
- a bright TFT as in the 750 models. Some shadowing can be seen though.
Keyboard:
- a good keaboard
- manual volume controol for the beeper is a good idea
- trackpoint works as i should. Personnally I have to get used to the cat
tongue surface though.
- The mouse buttons did not work well. I often had to repeat my click to get
it through. I like more the mouse buttons found in the 750/360 series. they
lack the lock possiblility but I dont need it. My 3 year old son found it
easier to play with Paintbrush since I could lock the mouse down for him.
Performance:
- at first the performance seemed to be comparable to the 360. However, this
was due to the processor speed set to low. I ran some of my applications to
benchmark the units 360(486/33 no co) 12Mram vs. 365E (56/100) 8Mram. My
applications are quite database oriented with some business graphics
included. (Neither of the units swapped much during the runs.) Some times
are enlisted below
360 365E
(M:SS) (M:SS)
1:35 1:00
7:15 4:15
6.55 3:34
Summary:
The 360 components cannot be used in 365 which I would value a lot.
The 365 is 1.5 to 2 times as fast as the 360. To my mind its not a big
enough improvement. I had problems with the mouse buttons. Otherwise the
screen and the unit in general were just fine considered its attractuive
pricing. You just cannot expect it to be similar to the rest of the TP series.
