"Want to?" No, I don't want to spend that much. The economies of the situation
haven't escaped me. Unfortunately, the availability of another broken machine
(as Chris suggested) seems small, because IBM's warranty is so good (grrr). And
the lowest prices I've seen for other machines are always the CS model (dual scan).
I'll lay you odds that the system board is different for a C (Active Matrix) model
(in my experience, they're the same board, but populated differently to drive a
different screen, but that puts me back in the situation of having to work on
the board).
No, my first pass will be to attempt to _fix_ it. I posted the prices just for
shock value (well, they sure shocked _me_ ;^).
There's a great deal of information to gather before I spend dime one. How to get
the case apart without breaking anything for starters. I have the star driver
necessary to take the screws out (Radio Shack allen wrench kit), but it all seems
perfectly tight and held together even without them. The top cover which goes
over the hinges and keyboard folding mechanism comes off (and if you're careful
you won't crack the plastic like I did). That's as far as I got. There are probably
plastic interlocks that have to be unlocked and no doubt my machine will be covered
with little scratches and nicks before I'm done <sigh>. I'll document what the
steps are and post them for posterity.
I just had a thought that perhaps it'll boot from floppy (not likely) or maybe
it's only the eeprom that's bad (ha), or maybe it's the phases of the Venus...
I have very little time to work on it right now (I'm involved in community theater
and we open our next play in two weeks) but I'll keep plugging and posting.
