I can't vouch for these folks, but they are the only third-pary laptop
repair oufit I am aware of. They might be able to help you, especially
since they have surface mount gear, and would be able to replace individual
ICs and such, rather than board level components. Fortunately, my brother's
360ce, (formerly mine), went haywire (after having been dropped on an icy
sidewalk), when it was out of warranty by a couple of months. IBM fixed it
completely without complaint, (and gave him a brand new warranty too!).
Granted, they claimed to have no sales-date information for his machine, but
it was a US machine. My 755CX has never had a problem. IBM must really
believe something foul went on with your particualar machine.
It sounds to me like the owner got burglarized all right, and you bought it
from the burglar, who picked up the "juicy" looking component, (which was
probabaly plugged into the wall at the time, hence no battery), and the
drive which was next to it.
Unfortunate. Let us know what happens.
