linux/X on TP 755cx?

Did some consensus ever emerge on what it takes to run X under
Linux on a 755cx in 800x600 mode?  I remember for a while Xfree86
was able to operate at 800x600 but not to actually put the Thinkpad
into that mode.  So it was necessary to boot MS-DOS, run a MODE
command, and then boot Linux.  I'd really like to avoid having to
do such a hack (DOS partition?  Who needs *that*?) and remember
there had been some discussion on the list of what to do.  I believe
the TP-Linux web page still says to do the DOS hack but it's hard
to believe there's not a better method available.  Thanks for any info
