In answer to a), I have successfully used a Toshiba 810Mb (MK1926FCV)
drive
and a Toshiba 1300Mb (MK1301MAV) drive in my 701c. I used the 810Mb drive
for a number of months and all the power-management functions seemed to
work
fine. Noise level and battery life were not appreciably different from
the original drive.

I've only had the 1300Mb drive for a couple of days so all I can really
report is that the BIOS does SEEM to recognize it correctly. The 701
bios does have a bug in the way it displays the drive capacity though -
when the capacity reaches a 4 digit number the display routine chops off
the leading digit (in my case the "displayed" capacity is 250Mb).
However, when I run fdisk it correctly identifies and uses the full drive
capacity.
